The Maintenance Free Myth

Posted July 12, 2020 8:46 AM

Sometimes we hear people in N. Hollywood say, "What's up with all this maintenance stuff? Modern cars just don't break down." While it is true that today's vehicles are extremely reliable, they are also becoming increasingly complicated and use more exotic materials than ever before. All that complexity demands higher tolerances for everything. For example, most N. Hollywood drivers don't realize how high tech automotive fluids have become,  fluids such as engine oil, transmission fluid, coolant and brake fluid.

Did you know that a modern engine would not run for more than a few months using motor oil formulas from 30 years ago? Today's automotive fluids contain a much higher percentage of additives to protect your vehicle's components from premature wear and corrosion. Time and distances march on for all of our cars. Please don't think we're using scare tactics to get you to take care of your maintenance - but here are some personal stories we've heard to emphasize and show how important it is to get things done when they are due. Names are withheld to avoid embarrassment to those who should know better. Even though they should know better, it usually comes down to real life: time and money. But they are tales of a stitch in time saves nine.

The first comes from someone who bought a used pick-up truck for his son. The oil was clean and all the fluids were topped off. A short time later, the truck overheated on a highway in CA and shut down. The repair shop diagnosed the problem: the radiator pan was corroded and dumped the coolant. Even though the coolant level was correct, it was clear that the coolant had never been completely replaced - just topped off from time to time. While this kept the engine cool, all of the anti-corrosion additives had worn out; the coolant became acidic and ate through the radiator pan. The cost: hundreds of dollars and four days in the shop. This demonstrates the need to get your coolant exchanged on schedule.

Another story involves the true cost of skipping an annual inspection. This guy took his SUV in for the CA safety inspection to renew his registration. At the N. Hollywood inspection station, he learned that the law had changed and that his newer rig only required an inspection every two years. He was very happy to save the money. The problem was, his rear brake pads were very worn. Two months later, it was bad enough that he could hear the grind - over the radio, DVD player and the kids. He took it in to get the bad news. Both of the rear brake rotors were damaged. The left one could be resurfaced. The right had to be replaced. So saving a little on his safety inspection turned into an extra $500 over what brake pad replacement would have been. Moral of the story for N. Hollywood drivers: don't skip your annual inspections. The irony is that many N. Hollywood service centers would have done a brake inspection for free.

Next: a teenage daughter and a curb. Daddy's little princess smacked a curb when she turned into a shopping center and popped the tire. The problem came when Dad didn't get an alignment. The impact was hard enough to ruin the tire - so it was enough wreck the alignment. But instead of an alignment after the first tire, Papa ended up buying a second tire a few months later - and then an alignment.

Situation: son and wife with cars from the same vehicle manufacturer with essentially the same engine. Our staffer checked the son's maintenance schedule and saw that it needed a timing belt replacement at 90,000 miles/145,000 km. He had it done - it cost several hundred dollars. His wife's car had about 60,000 miles/97,000 km, so it should be ok for a while. Right? Wrong. The problem was that the wife had the turbo charged version. Its belt was scheduled for replacement at 60,000 mi/97,000 km. At 63,000 mi./101,000 km, the belt snapped on the interstate. The valves all crashed down into the cylinders at high speed, the entire head was shredded and it had to be replaced. The cost: several thousand dollars. Does he wish he had checked the vehicle manufacturer’s maintenance schedule? You bet he does - every time he passes a big-screen TV.

The team at Ed's Automotive Center in N. Hollywood recommends taking care of little things before they become big things. And when you take care of the little things, you can make your car run better.  Plus, it is more economical to operate in CA. Remember to save those maintenance records. It'll show potential buyers that you've taken care of your vehicle and it will help you get a better price. Or when you buy a used car, check those records. If there aren't any, assume that the maintenance hasn't been done and take it to Ed's Automotive Center in N. Hollywood for an inspection. Take care of unperformed routine maintenance sooner rather than later.

  • I've been taking my cars to Ed's Automotive for several years now. Danny and his dad, Ed, have always been so patient putting up with the plethora of issues my cars have had, from specific parts needed to an intermittent mystery. They are honest about what has to be done and transparent about the priorities throughout the list, if there even is one. I appreciate them taking the time to explain or listen to me when I explain what's going on, even over the phone. I send everyone I know there, and quickly they became our family mechanic. I can't say enough good stuff, but will save it for the next person who asks for a good auto shop :)

  • These guys are great! Highly communicative and honest about pricing. They've always done a great job for me and my family members, and are always a friendly group to work with. Definitely a good option if you have car trouble.

  • To be honest I found these guys by accident one day. I needed radiator work done and got towed to the nearest place. That turned out to be one of the best shops I ever had the pleasure of dealing with. Ed, Dan, and everyone else inside Ed's auto center are the best at what they do and the most friendly bunch of people in the industry. Go here and see for yourself what getting your car fixed should be like.

  • Big Thank You to Danny! I had a vehicle, which I had never seen, dropped off to him for a pre-purchase inspection. Before he even opened the hood or put it on a lift, he called to tell me that the paint and body were not in very good shape. He told me that if he was looking for a car like the one I was, he would not buy that one. I told him not to proceed any further. He did not even charge me for the PPI! I truly appreciate his honesty and would not hesitate to trust them to work on a vehicle for me.

  • Fair prices and he showed me exactly what was happening which not most mechanics do. I'll definitely go back.

  • Our former mechanic closed shop and we've been hesitant to go somewhere new. My husband did a ton of research and found Ed's. Danny is amazing and I trust him fully with my car! His prices are fair, and the total bill was even less than he first projected. We are very happy to have found our new mechanic.

  • Two of the hardest things to find when you move to a new place: a barber & a mechanic. I finally found this place after months of looking and man am I happy I did. The guys here are friendly and professional with comparable prices to any other mechanic or jiffy lube or whatever. Do be warned that there is a fee to diagnose what's wrong with the car - a thing that was foreign to me and a little jarring at the beginning. Having said that, I highly recommend this place.

  • Great place, great people! Dropped in, changed oil and fixed tire pressure in a jiffy at great rate. Highly recommended!

  • Where I go to change my engine oil I started coming hear with a invitation from a friend that works there, and I pretty much know what to expect. Engine lights are frustrating so when it came on I came in. Diagnostic check was made and the shop made repairs along with and oil and filter change( it just happened I was ready for that). They are committed to inspections to insure the vehicle is safe ! so I do maintenance along with oil changes to ensure the vitality of my vehicle twice a year and my vehicle has not let me down. parts do wear out and its better to sit in a shop and maintain your vehicle apposed to being stranded on the side of the road. Take care

  • I recently visited Ed's Automotive Center to have some repairs done on my 2001 Tacoma. The experience and service was nothing short of 5 stars! The friendly and knowledgeable staff answered all of my questions and even pointed out something about a recent repair I had done at another shop. The price for my repair was far lower than I had been quoted at another shop. Needless to say, I was very happy with everything during my recent appointment. If you need any automotive repairs, diagnosis, consultation, reach out to Ed and his friendly staff!!

  • From my experience bringing my girlfriend's 2009 Ford Fusion as well as my 2013 Dodge Dart to Ed's, they are honest, priced fairly, timely and friendly. I took my girlfriend's car to another shop first and they tried to tell her and me that her belts were frayed. They were not frayed. They also had her sign a sheet to do the inspection and she didn't read it all the way and it included a $75 oil change, even though the oil was changed on her car not more than a thousand miles previously. We left the other shop, out $75 but took it over to Ed's. They are ASE certified (the other shop wasn't) and they quickly found the source of the problem (and it was not frayed belts). We left the car there and I believe it was done by the end of the day. I also brought my Dart in to get part of the front air dam/close-out panel installed. They had quoted me $30 a few weeks prior and when I finally brought it in, it turned out to require more work than we had thought it would but they still only charged me $30. As long as Ed's Automotive Center is around, we'll be loyal customers.

  • I bought a 2007 Honda CRV with a salvaged title. My insurance company needs a form completed by a mechanic. I stopped by my favorite auto body shop, LA Street Customs, the owner Julian said go see Ed's Automotive. I am happy I did. They said come at 8:30 AM and took me in right away. They did everything I expected and more. I got an excellent inspection at an excellent price. They also removed an aftermarket engine kill system that was a problem FOR FREE. Thank you to Ed's for excellent service, great prices and fast turnaround.

  • My car wouldn't stay running so made a bad choice to have my car towed to Mt. View auto on laurel canyon. Big mistake. After a new set of fuel injectors and a bill of $1.400 it ran worst than ever. My car stopped running a second time again towed it back to Mt. View auto. Told my car was high mileage and couldn't run any better. Took it to Ed's auto repair like I had done a year ago for smog test and other repair. Told Ed my issues. From Mt.View wanting me to let them do an engine rebuild for $6.000 and that I did not agree with their conclusion. Ed agreed and within a week figured out the issue got the part and my car is running great again. My stupidly of not going out of my way and getting it to Ed's cost me a lot of wasted time and money, and aggravating salespeople trying to convince me to spend more money on something there mechanics couldn't figure out. A good honest mechanic is hard to find here is a terrific one, go to Ed's Automotive Center to have your car repaired honestly.

  • This garage deserves the ratings it gets - even though my car was beyond repair, "Ed" was honest and helpful. He went above and beyond, explaining and showing me the damage, what it meant, and how the repairs would be done if requested. Additionally, he gave me recommendations about how to proceed with my car, options for replacement, and assured me he would check over any used car I was considering buying. This is a professional, comfortable, knowledgeable business. I'm far from my home and family, and I feel very fortunate coming across such a helpful shop in my time of need.

  • I had a very positive experience with Ed and his team. They were extremely professional; kept me constantly up to date on my car, its issues, and what they were doing to fix it; asked frequently about things they would have to do that would cost me money; and came in under the price they quoted me. Their professionalism and workmanship was exceptional!

  • I'm so relieved to have brought my new (to me) Scion in. I feel such calm knowing Danny went over it thoroughly and told me the things that were wrong with it (minimal-yeah!). This is the third car I've had at Ed's, they are trustworthy, genuinely communicative and always helpful!

  • If I could give more than 5 stars I would. Amazing customer service. I came in with an 86 toyota that had a do it yourself previous owner and they where able to diagnose and fix the problem in no time at all. The cost of the repairs was also extremely fair. Hands down the best mechanics I have found in a very long time. Thank you Dan and Ed for a great experience.
